September 16-17, 2001 — An end to taking the bad with the good
I cannot even begin to explain how sick I am of opening bands. Every show (all two of them) that I've been to since I moved to Toronto has been plagued with hours of bad music courtesy of opening bands. At least at the Dismemberment Plan show there was a variety of bad music; on Sunday night, before Do Make Say Think, the opening band played for over an hour. (It didn't help that they'd forced everyone to stand up before they played.) By about halfway through, you could see that they were losing a lot of the crowd. A guy backstage mouthed, "This is pretty fucking bad," to a person beside me, and only as one of the organizers made his way to the stage to ask them to start wrapping their set up did the lead singer announce that there would be only one more song. Doors were at 9:00 pm and the subway had stopped by the time we left at around 1:30 am. Which is beyond ridiculous for a show that began over four hours earlier with only one opening band.
Alright. I just needed to get that out of my system. Moving on (and a bit backwards), 75% of Cuff The Duke dropped by on Sunday afternoon to discuss the design for their CD before heading out to the Do Make Say Think show. It was a fairly calm get-together, and while we didn't much accomplished in the way of concrete design, we've a much better idea of where things are going now and of what they're looking for.
Beyond talk of CD design and attending the show that evening, not much happened on Sunday.
Monday was similarly uneventful, so long as you don't count work on antigreg as being much of an event. I'm slowly getting everything back online, leaving for last the rather epic task of redoing all of the journals and the message board. Things are making it back online, though, so I'm happy about that. By the end of the month, antigreg and the Doublenaut Web site should both be moving at full speed. I also have the transition of branvan3000.com to a new message board to worry about, unfortunately. But I'll figure something out...
Speaking of Bran Van 3000, I was told on Monday that I did in fact have at least one ticket for the MuchMusic Video Awards. Unfortunately, I was also told on Saturday that the MuchMusic Video Awards had been cancelled. Not just postponed. Cancelled. Sigh.
Luckily Godspeed You Black Emperor! added a second Toronto date, so my total number of shows during the month of September won't change. I don't know when my next chance to get Shaggy's autograph will be, though...
I'm going to start work on getting my journal archive online. That's going to be fun work, let me tell you...
Errk.
