January 23, 2001 — Aiming at Internet fame...
...and other oxymorons.
But seriously... it has been an interesting week for increased visits to the site and increased links to the site and that sort of thing. If this keeps up, it'll make next week a good time to make the site public (as I'd planned for awhile now). If all goes as planned, the new server will be going late this week or early next week with dual-webcams, chat, personal messaging, a much better discussion forum, and a few design fixes. But let's be honest, the odds of things going as planned are pretty darned slim. Still, it's fun to dream. And it'll all happen eventually.
Back in the world of university, I've only gone to one class and one lab this week. I plan on skipping the rest. And I skipped more than half of the lab; I just don't care anymore. I won't really be losing marks, but it's certainly an enormous waste for me to be here. I'll leave it at that because I'm not all that keen on even thinking about it at this point.
Meanwhile, I went to an English lecture (despite the fact that I'm not in any English courses) with some friends to watch "Superfly," as I'd been informed it would be projected in the place of an actual lecture. The theory being that it would help teach Iceberg Slim's "Pimp." Making the course professor the most brilliant I've ever known. "Superfly" wasn't exactly a classic film, but how can you go wrong with Curtis Mayfield putting together the soundtrack? (That's right, you can't.)
Believe it or not, the night went kind of downhill after that. Jeff, Johnston and I played Scrabble (Jeff won for the first time; I came in last, holding "quay" in the dire hope of finding a place to put it as the last moves were made) and I had to give in and buy food after having had only peanut butter sandwiches and chocolate milk for dinner. (I also managed to miss meal plan lunch and had rice crackers and cheese instead; I am the epitome of good health.)
I received the tentative tracklisting for the new Bran Van 3000 album today and am definitely looking forward to it. I'm going to post the list on the BV3 site in a day or two, but it's definitely looking like an impressive album from the songs I've heard and from the collaborators listed. I can't wait to build the site up around the album as I start to get more visitors at the site and as hype starts to build around the album. It's going to be fun.
As you can probably tell, I don't have all that much to discuss this journal. But I'll end with a theory of mine that came back to light today: is it just me, or is ICQ a hell of a lot more popular than AIM in Canada, with the opposite being true in the US? Seriously, it's bizarre. Pretty much no one I know uses AIM exclusively or even by choice. Everyone's on ICQ. And yet in the US, AIM is huge. A girl who ICQed me today actually commented that she hadn't been using ICQ much anymore because she'd drifted away from some Canadian friends. So there must be something to this. Any comments? Y'know, to feign interactivity and all. In the end, of course, it's a moot point since the monolith that is AOL owns both. But it's always fun to argue. I guess.
