I’ve given up trying to explain the order in which I’ve listed people on this page; it’s become pretty arbitrary.
Also, I should update this more often than I do.
Andrew and I shared a locker towards the end of high school, around the time we both decided to move to Toronto for university or college. He lived with Johnston and me during our second year in Toronto; we shared the second floor of a house with a thriving mouse population and an infuriating landlord.
After many years of talking about it and doing smaller projects here and there, we’ve started a graphic design company called Doublenaut. We now have an office and everything.
Andrew is winning the race to arrive at the office at a reasonable time. I am happy to make it in before noon.
Matt went to college in Ottawa but has since moved to Toronto to do Doublenaut full-time. Of the three of us, Matt lives closest to the office, so while he tends to make it in earlier than me, I think I am being unfairly handicapped by the extra fifteen minutes I have to walk each morning.
Also, Matt did the illustrations at the bottom of every page on this web site and in most of my booklets. I used one of his illustrations for a t-shirt once and then forgot to give him one because I am a bad friend.
I stopped going to university after my first year, took six months off, started working at a smoothie bar, switched to the returns department of a major home-furnishings retailer and then quit that job to work from home. This eventually led to starting a business with Andrew and Matt, which may or may not one day earn enough money for us to live off of.
I know that I should go back to school, and I might one day. But for now I’m content to make web sites while struggling to pay rent at home and for the office. This will last so long as my lavish lifestyle of concentrated juice and grilled-cheese sandwiches continues to be provided for.
Amy, Jeff and I shared an apartment after I moved out of the one I shared with Johnston and Andrew. She’s still in school and often lets me edit her essays for her, helping to keep my skills sharp and reminding me why I’m in no rush to give university a second chance. Amy had to explain the meaning of the word “blog” when she first met me because I’d never heard of one before. I’ve been trying to make up for my embarrassing lack of internet knowledge ever since.
Now that she’s graduated from York University, Amy has moved with Jeff to Guelph where she is doing whatever it is grad students do.
Johnston and I met Jeff during our first week at university. He was the only one in our residence who had a smaller room than we did, so he visited us a lot. We didn’t like university very much, and we (Johnston excepted) stopped going after our first year.
Jeff plays in a band called Cuff The Duke. I lived with him and Amy for a year, and I went on tour with Cuff The Duke twice during that same period. Jeff now lives in Guelph with Amy.
I shared a residence room with Johnston during our first year of university. He has since completed his four years while I've yet to begin my second. Johnston, Andrew and I shared the second floor of a house for about 18 months when we first lived in Toronto outside of residence buildings.
Johnston now lives in London and is a grad student at the University of Western Ontario.
I’ve known Trisha since 2002, and she has put up with a lot. The first time we hung out, I fainted because I got Kleenex stuck in my ear; now that we know each other better, she is normally the one to calm me down when something goes wrong.
I’m not really sure what I bring to the table, but we’re still friends, so I don’t want to ask too many questions.
After sitting in Mimi’s kitchen and complaining about not having anywhere to live in the fall of 2004, Mimi said I could live in her basement for a year. She’s taking photography at Ryerson University and is very good at it. She’s also very good at making homemade granola, which I’m told makes sense because she’s from Vancouver.
Marika and I went to New York City to visit Trisha one summer. We’d never made plans to spend time together before that week-long trip, and we didn’t talk very much for a while after it; as it turns out, I can be pretty depressing to spend time with, and I think it can be a bit of a shock to the uninitiated.
But we’re talking again now, so I like to think it wasn’t as bad as it probably was.
They were nice enough to put up with me for the summer of 2004.
Nathan introduced me to Trisha.
A lot of people have been omitted. This has more to do with my laziness than with whether or not they're important enough to make this list. It’s just that I have such a hard time keeping it updated as it is...
